A Houston woman is facing a felony charge after police say she left her two young children locked inside a residence without supervision. According to the probable cause statement, officers were dispatched to a well‑being check on February 11 and found a four‑year‑old boy “nude and stating his mother was at the supermarket,” while his three‑year‑old sister was asleep inside the home.
The statement says the children were found in “unsafe and unsanitary conditions,” with trash and food scattered throughout the residence and the temperature recorded at 86 degrees. A space heater was located in the children’s bedroom.
Police say the mother, Kico McCarthy, later returned and admitted she had gone to Walmart for groceries, acknowledging the children “do not have a phone” and would be unable to call for help.
McCarthy is charged with two counts of Abuse or Neglect of a Child.
