The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Michael L. Maloy of West Plains, fled into the residence and barricaded himself in the basement. A gunshot was heard shortly after, prompting Deputy Ryan to evacuate the remaining occupants. Witnesses informed deputies that Maloy had access to multiple firearms.

The Howell County SWAT Unit arrived on scene and obtained a warrant for Maloy’s arrest. An interior drone was deployed to assess the situation inside the home. The drone located Maloy lying face down on a bed with a shotgun nearby. When approached, Maloy pointed the weapon toward the drone, prompting officers to issue repeated commands for him to surrender.

After Maloy refused to comply, SWAT officers deployed CS gas into the residence. Maloy responded by cycling the action of his shotgun, escalating concerns. Additional CS gas was deployed, and after prolonged tactical efforts, Maloy exited the residence and surrendered peacefully. He was treated on scene for exposure to the gas and transported to the Howell County Jail.

Maloy is currently being held on charges of Domestic Assault in the First Degree, a Class A Felony, with bond set at $75,000. Authorities say additional charges related to the standoff are expected and will be submitted to the Howell County Prosecutor’s Office.
The swift response and coordination between deputies, SWAT personnel, and EMS ensured the safety of all involved and prevented further harm.
