JEFFERSON CITY – In a continuation of my previous Capitol Report, I’d like to keep reviewing my filed legislation, and also give an update where bills are currently at in the process. The bills I will provide an overview of this week are Senate Bills 999 & 1000.
Senate Bill 999 establishes the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.” This act protects children who are born alive during or after an attempted abortion. Once born, a child would have all the rights and privileges of any citizen of our great country. Life is sacred and should not be trivialized. I am 100% pro-life, and believe abortion is evil, but to deny medical services to a child who was miraculously born in spite of the abortion procedure, is even more abhorrent. Such actions should not be tolerated in our society, and this bill ensures they are not. This bill had a hearing earlier in the week, and I’m looking forward to an executive session vote soon.
Senate Bill 1000, reestablishes the Division of Tourism Supplemental Revenue Fund which would be funded by the tax on tourism-related industries. The bill would also allow the fund to receive money from a variety of other sources. The fund was accidentally sunset a few years ago, and this bill simply reestablishes the fund to allow the Department of Tourism to keep doing great work promoting our state. This bill received a hearing and executive session vote a few weeks ago, and I’m looking forward to having it heard on the Senate Floor soon.
In addition to the bills mentioned above, I have received hearings and executive session votes on Senate Bills 909 and 998. I have upcoming hearings on Senate Bills 907, 908, 1140, 1202 and 1291, as well as Senate Joint Resolution 93. I will be talking about all of those bills in the coming weeks. That’s it for this week, but as always, it’s an honor to serve.
