Hartville, MO. – A Doniphan man was arrested on Saturday night on suspicion of DWI and being a habitual offender.
Kevin Lynn Walters, age 51, is charged with DWI-Habitual, a class B felony, and is being held on a $5,000 cash-only bond.
According to the probable cause statement, deputies with the Wright County Sheriff’s Department were notified by 9-1-1 dispatch of a vehicle in the ditch at the intersection of Chadwell Road and MO-Y, 4.3 miles west of Norwood, shortly after 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Deputies found a Chevy HHR with one tire buried in the mud up to the axle and saw the driver, identified as Walters, near the vehicle. Walters initially grabbed a metal pole from the vehicle before officers ordered him to put it on the ground and was detained. Deputy JD Jordan notes in the statement Walters had slurring speech, glassy eyes, moved unsteadily, and smelled of an intoxicating substance.
In post-Miranda interviews, Walters denied a breathalyzer test and said he had two shots of Fireball at roughly 2 p.m. in Lebanon. Walters also did not know which county he was in and believed it to be after 8 p.m.
Walters history with DWI stretches back to 1994 and he was convicted of DWI in 1997 and DUI in Illinois in 2005 and 2006.
