West Plains, MO – In the wake of a heartbreaking case that captured the attention and compassion of an entire community, a powerful movement is taking shape—one driven by unity, justice, and love for those who cannot speak for themselves.
The case involved Diesel, a dog who was beaten and abandoned by his owner in Howell County. The incident, caught on video, stirred outrage across the Ozarks and beyond. Diesel was eventually rescued by Ozarks Pet Rescue and received medical care and safety thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers and animal advocates. But for many, helping Diesel was just the beginning. After rescuing the dog, who was abused and abandoned, Ozarks Pet Rescue notified the public that the abuser was only charged with abandonment and not for abuse.
Now, in his honor, the community is rallying around a new initiative: “Diesel’s Law.”
This proposed legislation aims to strengthen Missouri’s penalties for animal abuse, cruelty, and abandonment, which many believe are currently too lenient. Under current state law, most cases of abuse are charged as Class A misdemeanors, punishable by up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine. Even in cases involving torture or mutilation, offenders may only face a Class E felony, with a maximum of four years in prison. Neglect is often charged as a misdemeanor, with penalties that may be waived.
For the volunteers and advocates behind Diesel’s Law, that is not enough.
“We’re done watching abusers get a slap on the wrist while animals continue to suffer,” said a spokesperson for Ozarks Pet Rescue. “Diesel’s story broke our hearts, but it also lit a fire. We’re going to change this—together.”
Ozarks Pet Rescue is now calling on the public to get involved. Volunteers are needed to help make phone calls, collect petition signatures, gather legislative information, and assist with outreach. The organization is building a grassroots movement—powered by compassion, determination, and the belief that Missouri can do better for its animals.
This is a true example of the power of community. People from all walks of life—rescuers, families, advocates, and everyday citizens—are stepping up, proving that when a community unites around a cause, change is not only possible, but inevitable.
If you want to be a part of the Diesel’s Law movement, reach out to Ozarks Pet Rescue through their social media pages or contact them directly to volunteer. Whether you’re making calls, signing petitions, or simply sharing the message, every effort counts.
This isn’t just about one dog. It’s about changing the future for countless animals across Missouri. It’s about sending a clear message that cruelty will not be tolerated—and that compassion will always be louder.
Thank you to everyone who has already joined the fight. Together, we will make Diesel’s legacy one of justice, strength, and lasting change.
