Longtime community leader and dedicated public servant Jim Thompson was honored as the 2025 Distinguished Zizzer Alumnus during West Plains High School’s graduation ceremony, recognizing decades of leadership and impact on the local school district and broader community.

A 1969 graduate of West Plains High School, Thompson served an impressive 37 years on the West Plains R-VII Board of Education, first elected in 1987. Throughout his tenure, he played a critical role in shaping the district through substantial growth and change, always maintaining a student-centered focus and a steady vision for the future.

Thompson’s professional background spans radio, cable television, and education development, including co-ownership of Schwegman Office Supply and service at Missouri State University–West Plains. In 2001, he joined Air Evac, furthering his commitment to essential community services.

His civic contributions are equally notable. Thompson is a charter member of the Rotary Club of West Plains Sunrise, founding member and vice president of the Community Foundation of West Plains, and an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church–LCMS. He also mentored youth for years through Boy Scout Troop 61, serving in both leadership and advisory roles.

Now a proud father and grandfather of West Plains graduates, Thompson reflected on his years of service with humility: “There is no better way to serve the community than to do something that provides our children the opportunity to grow and learn.”

His induction into the Zizzer Distinguished Hall of Fame cements his legacy as a guiding force in education and community service in West Plains.
