Critical nutrition programs could be in jeopardy soon if the federal government shutdown continues throughout October.
Gov. Mike Kehoe said Missouri is reviewing what it can do for programs like WIC — to help women, infants, and children — and SNAP — to help low-income families.
“Yeah, we’re looking at those options. Obviously, there’s a little bit of runway before that happens, but you want to be prepared just in case. So we’ve been meeting with our folks and we’re trying to figure out options to keep those essential things going,” Kehoe told reporters today in Jefferson City.
Politicians in Washington don’t appear to have a deal worked out that they all can live with.
“We’re not going to let Missourians down. We’re not ready to announce what that is yet, but we’re going to work on that,” Kehoe said.
The federal government shutdown is in its sixth day. Congressional members are still getting paid.
