Missouri’s Hot Weather Law Takes Effect June 1

The Missouri Public Service Commission is reminding residents that the state’s Hot Weather Law goes into effect on June 1 and remains active through September 30.

The law is designed to protect residential customers of investor-owned utilities from electric or natural gas service disconnection due to non-payment when those services are used for cooling. Under the law, utilities cannot disconnect service if the National Weather Service predicts temperatures will exceed 95 degrees or the heat index will exceed 105 degrees within the next 24 hours (between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.).

While the law provides critical protection during periods of extreme heat, consumers remain responsible for paying their utility bills.
