Two suspects face multiple felony charges after an attempted inmate escape at the Howell County Courthouse resulted in a deputy being seriously injured.
Authorities say Shyanna Anderson parked a white Kia van near the courthouse with the sliding door open as inmate Zachary Castellanos, secured in handcuffs and ankle shackles, broke away from a deputy and entered the vehicle.
As the deputy tried to stop the escape, Anderson fled southbound on Aid Avenue with the deputy still inside. When Anderson accelerated at an intersection, the deputy was thrown to the ground, suffering serious injuries including a lacerated finger, head trauma, and road rash. He was transported by ambulance to Cox South Hospital in Springfield.
Anderson and Castellanos continued fleeing until officers from the West Plains Police Department and Howell County Sheriff’s Office pursued them to U.S. Highway 63 and Division Drive, where the van crashed into a ditch. Both suspects were taken into custody without further incident.
Charges filed include:
- Armed Criminal Action
- First‑Degree Assault (Special Victim)
- First‑Degree Kidnapping
- Resisting Arrest by Fleeing (Creating Risk of Injury/Death)
- Aiding Escape of a Prisoner Confined for Felony
Would you like me to also prepare a short broadcast script (30–45 seconds) that highlights just the charges, injuries, and arrests for radio or TV delivery?
