Prescribed Burn Planned for Eastern Shannon County on March 9

Shannon County, MO — The Ozark National Scenic Riverways, in partnership with the Missouri Department of Conservation, will conduct the Vance Barnett Prescribed Burn on Sunday, March 9, 2025, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The controlled burn will cover approximately 1,162 acres in eastern Shannon County, near the Current River. As part of this operation, travelers in the area may notice smoke from the burn site, particularly near the middle section of the Current River.

For public safety, the Ozark Trail segment from Klepzig Mill to Powder Mill will be closed during the burn. Officials advise visitors and hikers to plan accordingly and avoid the area until the operation is complete.

Prescribed burns are conducted to improve forest health, reduce wildfire risk, and enhance native plant and wildlife habitats.
