Ruud was indicted by a grand jury in September 2017 on charges of 2nd degree murder, child abuse resulting in death, tampering with physical evidence, and abandonment of a corpse.

Ruud is accused of killing her daughter, Savannah Leckie, who was 16-years-old at the time of her death. Leckie, who was given up for adoption at birth but was later returned to Ruud, was reported missing by Ruud on July 20, 2017. On August 4, 2017, human remains were found in a burn pile on the property where Ruud and her then-boyfriend, Robert Peat Jr., lived in rural Ozark County.

Peat was also indicted by the grand jury on similar charges. He has a pre-trial conference scheduled for February 7, 2020.
