State Rep. Travis Smith selected as Vice Chair of Missouri House Ways & Means Committee

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Following the news that Congressman Jason Smith will lead the influential Ways and Means Committee for the United States House of Representatives, state Rep. Travis Smith learned he will help lead a similar committee on the state level. Smith was recently selected by House Speaker Dean Plocher to serve as vice chair of the Missouri House Ways and Means Committee for the 102nd General Assembly.

“I was extremely excited to see Congressman Smith earn the coveted spot as chair of the Ways and Means Committee on the federal level. There’s no doubt his work in that role will mean good things for our state and our nation,” said Smith, R-Dora. “I hope we can make a similar positive impact here at the state level as our own Ways and Means Committee works to pass meaningful tax policy. I am eager to get to work with my chair and our committee members to keep our tax burden low and our tax policy fair.”

The House Ways and Means Committee considers bills and matters relating to the taxes of the state, tax credits, revenue and public debt of the state, and the interest thereon, and the administration of taxation and revenue laws. The committee may also inquire into and suggest to the House such changes, if any, that should be made in respect to existing sources of revenue and such new sources of revenue, if any, that in the judgment of the committee should be considered by the House. As vice chair, Smith will help guide the committee’s work in coordination with the chair, state Rep. Mike McGirl. Smith will preside over committee hearings in McGirl’s absence.

In addition to his service on the House Ways and Means Committee, Smith will serve as a member of the House Economic Development Committee and the House Special Committee on Tourism. He will also serve on the House Legislative Review Committee and as a member of the Joint Committee on Rural Economic Development.

First elected in November 2020 and reelected in November 2022, Smith is beginning his second term in office. He represents District 155, which includes Ozark County, as well as parts of Douglas, Taney, and Stone counties.
