West Plains Board of Education update

The West Plains School District Board of Education met Tuesday (1/21) for its regular monthly meeting.

Academic Update
Dr. Greg Carter and Tiffany Young gave the board an update on teaching and learning at the elementary and secondary levels. Dr. Carter spoke about the K-2 RPDC essential standard training on January 14. He also updated the board on the district-wide professional development day on February 12 with Hal Bowman to present “Teach like a Rockstar.” Mrs. Young updated the board on MOLeap and the online learning academy.

Capital Improvements Update
Dr. Davis gave an update on the current projects, including the West Plains Elementary office renovation.

File for Board Candidate – December 15, 2020 – January 19, 2021
Board candidate election filings opened at 8:00 a.m. on December 15 and closed at 5:00 p.m. January 19, 2021. Jim Thompson and Brian Mitchell are in their final year of a three-year term. Mr. Thompson and Mr. Mitchell filed for another term and were unopposed. As a result, no election will be required. Mr. Thompson and Mr. Mitchell will be sworn in to serve a 3-year team at the April board meeting.

Spring Semester Return to School Update
Grades 7-12 returned to school in a full 5 day learning environment on January 4, 2021. All buildings remain closed to the public. More information can be found at www.zizzers.org

MSBA Policy Updates
MSBA has provided the district with some additional policy recommendations that align with legislative changes. The board will approve the policy recommendations at the February board meeting.

2021-2022 School Calendar – 1st Read
The board conducted a first read of the 2021-2022 district calendar. The proposed calendar is very similar to the current year calendar using corresponding dates. The board will be asked to approve the calendar in February. The current district calendar can be found online at www.zizzers.org under Parent Resources.

Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Wilson updated the board on the state board of education meeting held virtually last week. She also discussed the spring semester, the return of students and asked each building principal to give an update.

The next board meeting is scheduled for February 16, 2021, at the Zizzer Pride Learning Academy.
School board meetings are held monthly on the third Tuesday of each month, unless otherwise posted.
