Over the past year, the West Plains Public Library has achieved remarkable growth and impact across nearly every area of service. From expanding programs and increasing engagement to strengthening partnerships and improving access to technology, MLA recognized the West Plains Public Library for consistently going above and beyond to meet the needs of the community.

A record year of growth and impact

In 2024 the library experienced significant growth across nearly every measure of service:

  • Memberships rose by 27%;
  • Program attendance increased by nearly 60%;
  • More than 55,000 visitors visited the library; and
  • Patrons logged 33,000 individual wireless sessions and 6,000 public computer logins, underscoring the library’s role in digital inclusion

The 2024 summer youth program also saw a 40% increase in participation, with extra sessions added to meet demand. Weekly story times, reading challenges for all ages, and special programs strengthened family and community connections, and expanded digital service products ensured learning was available anytime and anywhere.

Partnership driven, community focused

The library deepened its cultural and educational reach through partnerships with the West Plains Council on the Arts and the Missouri Humanities Council. Community support followed, including private donations doubling from $17,000 to $32,000.

Grant funding was also secured to support security upgrades, literacy initiatives, and technology improvements. Looking ahead, the library plans to redesign community spaces and provide a dedicated area for readers in grades 5–8. Signature events like the Foundation’s Festival of Trees Christmas Gala and the Dino Dimensions field trip experience brought the community together in memorable ways.

“The West Plains Public Library is more than a building. It is a vibrant, innovative cornerstone of our community,” added Dr. Carter. “This recognition reflects the dedication of the staff and volunteers who serve West Plains every day.”
