Cardinal and Royals scores and recaps

The Yankees hit four home runs in their series-opening 4-1 win over the Royals. Jazz Chisholm Jr. went yard in the fourth inning and Trent Grisham, Ben Rice and Austin Wells all clubbed homers in the fifth to provide all of New York’s scoring. Yankee starter Carlos Carrasco gave up a run on one hit in five innings to earn the victory. The Yankees improved to 9-and-7. Kansas City’s lone run was driven in on a solo shot off the bat of Bobby Witt Jr. in the third that gave the Royals a 1-0 lead. The teams continue their series Tuesday night.

The Cardinals climbed back to .500 with an 8-3 series-opening win over the Astros at Busch Stadium. St. Louis scored the first eight runs of the game behind a pair of three-run frames in the fourth and fifth innings. Cardinals starter Sonny Gray got the win after tossing seven shutout innings and striking out four Houston batters. The 8-and-8 Cardinals send Steven Matz to the mound against the Astros this afternoon.
