University of Missouri men’s basketball officially added to its interior on Wednesday, signing 7-foot center Shawn Phillips Jr. from Arizona State.
Phillips played in 31 games with 12 starting assignments with the Sun Devils during the 2024-25 season, averaging 5.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.13 blocks per game in 18.0 minutes of action. The Dayton, Ohio, native played his best basketball down the stretch – starting 12 of the last 13 contests, while posting 7.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 24.6 minutes of action.
“We’re excited to welcome Shawn to Mizzou,” said Whitten Family Head Coach Dennis Gates. “Shawn brings valuable experience to our program, having played in three power conferences, including a season in the SEC. He has great size, length and athleticism and has a strong presence in the paint with elite rim protection skills. He has been very efficient during his career on both ends of the court and we expect him to have a big impact on our success this season.”
Overall, Phillips played 53 games with the Sun Devils, starting 23 contests. He totaled 290 points, 234 rebounds and 59 blocks in his two seasons on campus, shooting 56.3 percent from the field. During the 2024-25 campaign, Phillips ranked in the top 200 nationally with his 1.13 blocks per game plus in the top 100 in the country in both defensive rebounding percentage and block percentage.
Phillips, who has experience in the SEC, Pac-12 and Big Ten, started his collegiate career at LSU in 2022. He appeared in 20 games with the Tigers, highlighted by a 13-point, 10-rebound performance in a win over Georgia in the SEC Tournament.
The fourth signee for Mizzou during the spring period, Phillips joins Sebastian Mack (UCLA), Luke Northweather (Oklahoma) and Jevon Porter (Loyola Marymount) as transfers added to the Mizzou roster. The four join a program that posted three top-five wins last season for the first time since 1988-89 – advancing to the NCAA Tournament from an SEC that sent a record 14 schools to the national tournament.
