No. 25 Mizzou volleyball (3-2) falls 3-1 to No. 5 Stanford Cardinal (4-2) on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Hearnes Center.
The Tigers recorded a .291 hitting percentage in comparison to Stanford’s .408 hitting percentage as they dropped the match in four sets.
KEY PLAYERS
- Senior Maya Sands compiled 16 digs and two aces during the match.
- Senior Caylen Alexander led the team with 15 kills.
- Redshirt senior Tyrah Ariail posted 13 kills. Ariail recorded a new season high with a .750 hitting percentage.
- Freshman Zoey Matias-Lopez gathered 15 digs, a new season and career high.
FIRST SET (25-23, Stanford leads 1-0)
The first set was back-and-forth from the jump, but a 5-1 run by the Tigers was good enough to give them a two-point advantage early in the frame.
After a while of battling by both teams, a late run for Stanford clinched a set-one victory. Outside hitter Caylen Alexander led Missouri with six kills in the first frame.
SECOND SET (33-31, Stanford leads 2-0)
Missouri found themselves an early advantage in the second set with multiple 4-0 runs that helped aid a 10-5 lead. Mizzou maintained that lead until late in the set when the Cardinal forced a win-by-two scenario.
Both teams kept exchanging points back-and-forth until Stanford capitalized and won the set 33-31.
THIRD SET (25-22, Stanford leads 2-1)
Like the first two sets, the third one was a battle from the jump.
Early on, Mizzou capitalized and obtained a lead as high as six due to a 4-0 run by the Tigers in the middle of the set.
This time, the Cardinal couldn’t gain enough momentum for a comeback as a kill by setter Marina Crownover won the set for the Tigers, 25-22.
FOURTH SET (25-21, Stanford Wins 3-1)
Missouri carried its momentum into the fourth set as it started off on a 3-0 run.
However, the Cardinal quickly clawed their way back and made the set a battle. Stanford kept the pressure on until they won the set and the match with a late run.
GAME NOTES
- The all-time series against the Cardinal moves to 0-3.
- Head coach Dawn Sullivan is 43-24 with the Tigers, and is 152-62 overall.
- Maya Sands is one ace away from 100 career aces.
UP NEXT
- The Tigers will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, in the Fight in the Fort Invitational this Thursday and Friday, Sept. 11-12. On Thursday, Mizzou faces Wyoming at 11 a.m. before taking on Rhode Island at 4 p.m. The Tigers cap off the invitational on Friday with a match against the host TCU at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
