The Tigers dropped the first-round matchup to Auburn, as they scored six runs in the final two innings to win 6-2.
LEXINGTON, Ky – Mizzou softball (28-29, 9-15 SEC) fell to a late Auburn (25-27, 4-20 SEC) rally, as it finished the season with a 6-2 loss on Tuesday, May 5, at John Cropp Stadium.
Freshmen Sidney Forrester and Abby Carr picked up RBIs in the first inning of the game, and Carr ended up with the loss to move to 6-5 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the top half of the first, the Tigers showcased why they have one of the best defenses in the country. Auburn secured a leadoff triple, but Mizzou was able to tag out that runner, as she tried to advance home on a groundout to first base. MU used that momentum in both halves of the inning with two early runs on an RBI double from freshman Abby Carr and a single from freshman Sidney Forrester.
The game’s offensive flow simmered over the following innings as both pitchers settled in. Mizzou started to threaten again in the bottom of the fourth, as it placed runners on first and third with one out. However, those runners remained stranded with a strikeout and a flyout to center.
As both teams were cold, the pitching staffs heated up, as senior Cierra Harrison allowed just one hit since the leadoff runner got on as she started the sixth inning.
However, Harrison opened the third time through the lineup, giving up a leadoff triple. After that hit, Carr replaced Harrison on the mound, as she ended her day going five innings, allowing one earned run and three hits.
In the top of the sixth, Auburn rallied, scoring on a throwing error, a wild pitch, followed by a two-run home run, making the score 4-2. The Tigers only added to their lead in the top half of the seventh with a solo shot to make it 5-2. They once again scored with a single to centerfield to confirm the scoring for the game.
