West Plains, MO — November 12, 2025 — The West Plains Area Dugout Club is proud to announce a memorial gift from the family of Roger Garner, a beloved teacher, coach, and mentor whose devotion to students and athletics left a lasting mark on the community.
The gift will officially dedicate the Grizzly Baseball First Base Dugout in honor of Roger Garner, celebrating his lifelong commitment to education, sportsmanship, and service. Garner, who grew up in West Plains, was a standout multi-sport athlete and a lifelong fan of both baseball and basketball. After attending the Residence Center (now Missouri State University–West Plains), he was drafted into the U.S. Navy, where he served in Vietnam aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard . His time in the Navy further deepened his love for teamwork and competition, as he often shared fond memories of playing on the ship’s basketball team and the lasting friendships he built during those years.
Following his military service, Roger earned his teaching degree from Missouri State University (then SMS) in Springfield and went on to impact countless students as an educator and coach. Known for his patience, kindness, and personal investment in his students, he guided young people not only in academics but in life. Over the years, he coached or assisted with nearly every sport offered — from basketball and baseball to girls’ softball and golf.
Even after retirement, Roger remained a dedicated supporter of athletics. He was a familiar face at Grizzly games in West Plains and, later, at Missouri State University sporting events in Springfield, where he rarely missed a Bears or Lady Bears game.
“Naming the First Base Dugout in his honor is a great way to remember his love of sports, and his impact on our community and the importance of education.“ said Robbie Crites, President of Dugout Club. “Like countless others, I still fondly remember him as my driver’s ed teacher and a coach. The Garner family’s generosity ensures that Coach’s spirit of mentorship and teamwork continues to inspire generations of student athletes.”
