(WEST PLAINS, MO) While the school year is drawing to a close, the West Plains school district is already gearing up for a busy summer season. Athletic Director Ashley Culie recently sat down with News Team 7 to detail the upcoming “Zizzer” summer programs, emphasizing that there is no rest for the weary as activities kick off shortly after the final school bell rings.
With school officially wrapping up on Wednesday, May 13th, the transition to summer programming will be swift. Summer camps, weightlifting, and cardio courses are scheduled to begin on Monday, May 18th.
The district is offering a wide variety of opportunities beyond traditional sports. Culie highlighted that the camps are designed for all students within the community to explore new interests or hone existing skills. Featured programs include:
Athletics: All athletic teams will be offering specific camps throughout the summer.
Fine Arts: Detailed camps for band, including specialized sessions for marching band, percussion, and color guard.
Academic & Performance: Choir and speech and debate camps are also on the schedule.
Registration and Safety Requirements
To ensure student safety and compliance, the district has specific requirements for participation:
Grades 7-12: Students must have a current MSHSAA physical on file and complete the “Final Forms” registration before participating in any contact practices, camps, or weight courses.
Grades 6 and Below: Younger students require a signed youth participation form, which can be obtained through coaches, the Zizzer social media pages, or the district website.
Cost and Benefits
Most camps are priced at $25 per student, a fee that typically includes a Zizzer t-shirt or other memorabilia. Beyond the gear, Culie noted that these programs are a vital way for students to get out of the house, reconnect with friends, and discover new passions during the summer break.
