Koshkonong Schools Superintendent Seth Bryant, Koshkonong Elementary School principal Misty Dale, Koshkonong High School principal Brian Davis and Koshkonong Public Library librarian Myra Titsworth plan to accept the donations, which aim to support the purchase of books, instructional materials, computers and technology and software to support literacy and education throughout the Oregon County community.

“Koshkonong is an incredibly special community, and we are excited to surprise and extend our philanthropic efforts to further demonstrate our mission and serve as a positive community citizen,” shared Connie Droge, Dollar General’s senior vice president of store operations. “In living out the Company’s mission of Serving Others, this Dollar General Literacy Foundation donation aims to strengthen the city’s literacy programs and inspire educational innovation. We look forward to a long-standing partnership with the community and thank the entire Koshkonong leadership for their continued support of Dollar General.”

Dollar General opened its first store in Koshkonong in late February 2020 after the city embarked on a 30-day social media campaign in July 2019 requesting the Company to build a store in town.

“I had a gentlemen stop me outside and of the store and say, ‘This store gets more valuable everyday’ and he wouldn’t know what we he would do without Dollar General,” shared former Koshkonong Mayor George Hunt. “We have a lot of people on a fixed income who can get the essentials they need here. We truly appreciate Dollar General coming to our community.”

“The community has blossomed with Dollar General here,” shared Hope Reed, Koshkonong’s social media manager and alderman. “As soon as they [Dollar General] came in, we danced in the streets and had a big celebration. We count the store as a true blessing.”

Dollar General believes the addition of each new store represents positive economic impact through the creation of new jobs and availability for employees to grow meaningful careers; the affordable accessibility of name-brand and private-brand products; the availability for area nonprofits, schools and libraries to apply for Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants; and the generation of local tax revenue.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation supports organizations that increase access to educational programming, inspire and advance innovation and enhance the quality of instruction in the classroom. Each year, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awards funds to nonprofit organizations, schools, and libraries within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center to support adult, family, summer, and youth literacy programs.  The Foundation also offers a student referral program for individuals interested in learning how to read, speak English, or prepare for the high school equivalency exam.  Referrals to a local organization that provides free literacy services are available online here or through referral cards found in the Learn to Read brochures that are available at the cash register of every Dollar General store.
