Arkansas State Police Reinforce ‘Move Over’ Law After Multi-State Crackdown

The Arkansas State Police (ASP) is reminding drivers across the state that failing to comply with the “Move Over” law is not only dangerous — it can be costly or even deadly.

Arkansas law requires drivers to move over for a wide range of authorized vehicles displaying flashing lights — including emergency responders, utility trucks, tow trucks, and Arkansas Department of Transportation vehicles. If a lane change is not possible, drivers are required to slow down significantly and proceed with caution.

Violators of the Move Over Law can face fines between $250 and $1,000, possible jail time, and even the loss of their driver’s license.

On May 14, ASP joined with highway patrol agencies in Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Oklahoma for a one-day enforcement effort focused on Move Over and Slow Down law compliance. The operation resulted in 7,687 traffic stops, with ASP alone pulling over 1,326 drivers for related violations. Of those, 1,013 warnings were issued and 580 citations handed out.

In total, officers during the multi-state initiative also cited 642 speeding violations, assisted 114 stranded motorists, issued 79 seatbelt citations, executed 33 warrants, and apprehended seven individuals.
