Due to the extreme cold, spanning across the country, the City of West Plains is issuing a Peak Alert, to our customers, starting tonight, January 25, 2026 and lasting throughout tomorrow, January 26, 2026, asking customers to help conserve electricity.
“We are under a peak alert this evening through tomorrow morning due to high demand across the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) regional power grid.” said City of West Plains Utility Director, Shayne Eades. “A peak alert means the electric system is under heavy load and conserving electricity helps reduce strain and maintain reliable service.“
Due to the forecasted snowfall and cold weather, West Plains Utilities was requested to operate its peaking generator.
Starting at 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning – and committed to running until noon on Monday of this week – our crews are on site, producing 21 Megawatts of power per hour. This power is getting pushed back into the power grid, to help supply power to people across the Midwest.
