Local Missouri Counties Receive 2023 SRS Payments

The SRS, or Secure Rural Schools Program, put together through the U.S. Forest Service, has recently paid out funds to local Missouri Counties with national forest land.

The SRS Program was put into place in the early 1900’s as a measure to support rural counties whose tax base was limited by the growing federal land. What this means for the modern resident of these places, is that a portion of Forest Service funds that are generated through activities such as timber production or special use permits are distributed back to the eligible counties that contain national forest land. Payments are divided into categories including roads and schools, federal lands, and county projects.
